Mattress Topper for Box Spring Beds: Height, Size and Choice
A topper can be placed on almost any box spring bed. This guide explains what matters for height, size and fixing.
What is a topper for on a box spring bed?
Yes, a topper can generally be placed on a box spring bed: it is laid as an additional layer on the top mattress and, depending on the material, makes the sleeping surface softer or slightly more cushioning, without you having to replace the whole bed. Many box spring beds already come with a topper fitted from the factory. This is part of the comfort build-up and can usually be removed or replaced.
Typical reasons for adding a topper:
- The sleeping surface feels different over time compared with when you bought it.
- You would like to make the bed a little softer without buying a new mattress.
- Two separate mattresses should feel more even thanks to a continuous layer.
- The guest bed should get a more pleasant surface for changing sleepers.
A topper replaces neither the mattress nor the base. It is an addition. Whether your bed feels better afterwards is a matter of taste and is most easily found out by trying it yourself.
Which height suits a box spring bed?
With a box spring bed, height matters more than with a flat slatted-frame bed, because the sleeping surface is high anyway. Every centimetre of topper raises the entry height. With very high beds, the lower models are therefore often more comfortable, while with lower beds even a thicker topper is no bother.
Our toppers at a glance:
| Model | Height | Construction | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Comfort Topper | 7 cm | Gel memory foam, density 40 D | H3, medium-soft (manufacturer's indication) |
| 2-in-1 Comfort Topper | 5 cm | 2 cm gel memory foam (H3) + 3 cm support foam (H4) | reversible: softer or firmer side up |
| Dream Topper | 5 cm | Foam with memory effect | removable cover, non-slip underside |
Before buying, measure your current entry height once (top of the mattress to the floor) and consider whether you would find an extra 5 or 7 cm comfortable. You can read more on choosing thickness in the guide to topper thickness. For firmness grades (not standardised, so only partly comparable between manufacturers), you will find explanations under Topper firmness.
Replacing a topper: when a new one is due
If the existing topper on your box spring bed has sagged or the sleeping surface feels different from before, a change can make sense. Typical signs are visible hollows, dents that no longer disappear, a clearly changed impression of firmness or damage to the cover.
How to proceed:
- Check whether the topper simply lies on top or is attached to the mattress (elastic bands, zip, adhesive).
- Measure the sleeping surface, not the old topper, as this may have changed with use.
- Place the new layer centrally and let it unfold for 24 to 48 hours.
Important: if the top mattress itself has sagged badly, a topper only compensates for part of it. In that case it may make more sense to reassess the bed as a whole. You will find a decision aid in the guide Mattress too hard or too soft.
Size and fit on a box spring bed
The size is based on the sleeping surface, not on the bed frame. Box spring beds are often 140 × 200, 160 × 200 or 180 × 200 cm. With double beds, the sleeping surface often consists of two mattresses side by side (for example 2 × 90 cm), sometimes also of one continuous top mattress.
Our toppers come in widths of 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200 and 220 cm at a length of 200 cm. You can find the matching size pages here:
A continuous topper over two mattresses covers the gap between them; how much you still feel it afterwards depends on the bed. When measuring, take the length and width of the mattress, not the frame. According to the warranty terms, deviations of up to 1.5 cm in length and width and up to 1 cm in height are possible. Allow for this if your box spring bed is very tightly sized. The size guide offers an overview of mattress dimensions.
Fixing and fitted sheets
A topper should stay in place at night. All three toppers have aids for this: the Premium Comfort Topper and the 2-in-1 Comfort Topper have a non-slip underside and elastic bands or rubber bands respectively, the Dream Topper a non-slip underside fabric. On smooth surfaces, toppers can still move slightly.
Tips for a good hold:
- Place the topper centrally and avoid overhang on all sides.
- Hook the bands onto the mattress corners, where present.
- Pull a matching fitted sheet over mattress and topper.
For the sheet, the pocket depth counts: add the mattress height and the topper height together and check in the sheet's product description up to which total height it fits. If the sheet is too tight, it slips off at the corners and takes the topper with it.
Material and care: what you can look for
Which foam feels right to you is individual. You will find a neutral comparison in the comparison of gel, cold foam and visco toppers.
For care, the following applies to all three models: the foam core is not washed, only the removable cover. Exact details on programme and drying are on the care label. Step-by-step instructions are in the guide Washing and caring for a topper.
Who are our toppers rather not meant for? If you are looking for a very firm feel without any give, you will tend to find less with foam layers. And if you already have a badly sagged mattress, be realistic: a topper is a layer, not a replacement for an intact base.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put a topper on a box spring bed?
Yes. A topper is simply placed on the existing sleeping surface. What matters is the right size and fixing, for example with rubber bands and a fitted sheet. If your bed already has a topper fitted, you can usually remove it and replace it with a new one.
Which topper height suits a box spring bed?
That depends on your entry height and the feel you want. Our toppers are 5 cm (2-in-1 Comfort Topper, Dream Topper) or 7 cm (Premium Comfort Topper) high. With very high beds, the lower option may be more comfortable. In the end it is a matter of taste.
Which topper size do I need for a 180×200 box spring bed?
For a sleeping surface of 180 × 200 cm, a topper in 180 × 200 cm fits. This applies to a continuous mattress as well as to two mattresses of 90 × 200 cm each. To be safe, re-measure the mattress, as dimensions can deviate by up to 1.5 cm.
Does a topper slip on a box spring bed?
This can happen on smooth surfaces. Helpful measures are placing it centrally, the elastic or rubber bands at the corners (where the model has them) and a matching fitted sheet over mattress and topper. Make sure the sheet is designed for the total height of mattress and topper.
How do I care for the topper on a box spring bed?
The foam core is not washed but aired. The removable cover can be washed according to the care label. Follow the notes on the label of your model for programme and drying, and let the cover dry completely before putting it back on.
