New Mattress Smell: Why It Happens and How to Air It Out

Practical steps for the first days after unpacking, without household-remedy experiments.

Why does a new mattress smell?

A new foam mattress can have a new smell after unpacking, which usually fades after a few days in a well-ventilated room. How strong it is and how long it lasts depends on material, time in packaging and room air. A fixed time cannot be given for every mattress.

Foams are often compressed, rolled or vacuum-packed before shipping. When opened, a typical new smell can escape. Cover fabrics and packaging material can also smell.

The warranty terms for our products also state explicitly that a new smell is possible and fades with airing. We do not make any health assessment of smells; follow the notes for the respective product.

Unpacking step by step

A calm approach helps avoid concentrating the smell in the bedroom:

  1. Clear some space and cover the floor so the mattress stays clean.
  2. Open the packaging carefully. For our memory foam folding mattress: do not cut open the zip bag with a knife or scissors.
  3. Pull the mattress out of the plastic cover. With the Classic Comfort Mattress, you then roll it out.
  4. Let the mattress unfold for 24 to 48 hours before putting on bed linen. This applies to our Premium 7-Zone Comfort Mattress as well.
  5. Dispose of the plastic cover and bag straight away so the smell does not linger in the room.

The exact notes on unpacking, unfolding and care are in the instructions and on the label of your product. If in doubt, these apply, not general advice.

How to air it properly

The usual remedy is fresh air. A few practical tips:

  • Air the room thoroughly several times a day (open windows opposite each other if possible).
  • Leave the mattress without a fitted sheet and protector at first so air reaches all surfaces.
  • If there is space and the instructions do not say otherwise, it can stand briefly on its side against a wall. Make sure it does not tip over and that the foam is not creased.
  • Do not put it in direct sunshine or on a radiator. Heat can change foams.
  • A dry, ventilated room is better than a cellar or a strongly heated room.

Good to know: the choice of room also plays a role. A guest room that is aired daily anyway is usually easier than a small, closed room.

Do not mask it with fragrance

Perfumes, room sprays or scent bags only mask the smell and mix with it. The result can be more unpleasant than the new smell itself. Spray products can also leave residues on the foam surface.

Household remedies such as vinegar or baking soda are not suitable in every case either; which products come into question for your material is stated, if at all, in the care instructions. If nothing is stated there, plain airing is the safe choice.

And: do not treat the foam with moisture. The core of wet mattresses dries only slowly and cannot be washed. Only covers that are removable and washable go in the machine, according to the care label.

When to ask customer service

Normally the smell fades over time. Contact customer service if the smell stays equally strong after several weeks and regular airing, or if the mattress arrived damaged.

Have your order number and, if possible, a photo of the mattress ready. This makes it quicker to clarify what happens next. You will find the conditions and deadlines under Shipping & returns.

For medical questions, please contact a doctor; a guide cannot replace that.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a new mattress smell?

That cannot be said in general. With foams, the new smell often fades after a few days to weeks; we cannot give a fixed time. Material, room air and ventilation are what count. Follow the details in the instructions for your product.

Can I sleep on the new mattress straight away?

First allow for unfolding: according to the product information, 24 to 48 hours until full height is reached. After that you can make up the mattress. If someone finds the smell bothersome, keep airing for a few more days before making it up. The decision is yours.

Should I treat the mattress with baking soda or room spray?

We advise against treating the foam with products that are not in the care instructions. Fragrances only mask the smell. Repeated airing with the window open, without direct sunshine and without a radiator nearby, makes more sense. Which care products come into question for your product is stated in the instructions.

What do I do if the smell is still strong after weeks?

Contact customer service and have your order number and a photo ready. You will find the warranty and return conditions on our Shipping & returns page. Until it is clarified, keep airing regularly, and do not put the mattress in direct sunshine or next to a radiator.

May I wash the mattress cover to reduce the smell?

Only if the cover is removable and washable according to the care label; you do not wash the foam core. Whether this reduces the smell depends on where the smell comes from. Often the foam itself is the cause and the cover only a small part.
