Memory Foam, Gel or Cold Foam Topper: The Differences at a Glance
Three foam types, three ways of feeling: here you see neutrally what defines each type and where its limits lie.
In brief: the three foam types compared
Visco foam (also called memory foam) gives way under pressure and recovers slowly. Cold foam is considered airier and springs back faster. Gel foam is usually visco or other foam to which gel has been mixed or applied; the name alone says little about the core. Which type feels right for you is a matter of taste.
| Feature | Visco / memory foam | Gel foam | Cold foam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | cushioning, slow recovery | usually like visco, slightly different depending on construction | springier, sinks in less |
| Recovery | slow | depends on the core | fast |
| Warmth | reacts to body heat, can feel warmer | sometimes perceived as cooler, varies by product | usually airier |
| Weight | often heavier | often heavier | often lighter |
The table shows general tendencies. Individual products may differ.
Visco / memory foam toppers
Viscoelastic foam, usually called visco or memory foam in shops, deforms under pressure and warmth and then slowly returns to its original shape. Many describe this as "enveloping" or "softly yielding". Whether that is pleasant is a matter of taste.
Advantages:
- Gives way under pressure points such as shoulder and hip, without the surface springing much.
- The feel is often described as even and calm.
- Combines well with a firmer mattress if you want more give.
Disadvantages:
- Reacts to room temperature: in cool rooms the foam can feel firmer and give way more slowly.
- Can feel warmer if the construction is poorly ventilated.
- The slow recovery bothers some people when turning and moving.
- Often heavier and thus less handy than cold foam.
The Dream Topper (5 cm) is not a classic memory foam but is described as foam with a memory effect. It should therefore not be equated with true visco foam.
Gel foam toppers
"Gel topper" is not a uniform term. It usually means visco or memory foam with a gel component, with some products also a gel layer on foam. How much gel is contained and what it does in everyday use is stated differently by manufacturers.
What can speak for gel foam:
- The feel is similar to visco foam but can come across slightly differently depending on the formula.
- Manufacturers often associate gel with a cooler feel. Whether that is noticeable in everyday use depends on the product and your own perception; it cannot be proven in general.
What can speak against it:
- The added value compared with normal visco foam is individual and not always noticeable.
- The weight is often similarly high.
According to the manufacturer, the Premium Comfort Topper (7 cm) is made of gel memory foam. On the 2-in-1 Comfort Topper, 2 cm of gel memory foam (H3, soft) sit on 3 cm of support foam (H4, firm). This lets you choose which side is on top. For more on firmness, see the guide Topper firmness.
Cold foam toppers
Cold foam, often also called HR foam, is made of open-cell polyurethane with an elastic cell structure. It springs back faster than visco foam and is considered airy.
Advantages:
- Fast recovery, which makes turning over in bed easy.
- Often lighter and easier to handle.
- Usually reacts less to room temperature than visco foam.
Disadvantages:
- Less cushioning: the surface adapts less to the shape of the body.
- If you like the "sinking in" of visco foam, you sometimes find cold foam too firm or too direct.
We currently do not offer a cold foam topper. If you prefer a springy foam, our toppers (gel memory foam, foam with a memory effect) are probably not the right choice.
Guidance by personal preference
The following table describes preferences, not effects:
| If you ... | then this might suit you more |
|---|---|
| like a soft, yielding feel | visco or gel memory foam |
| move a lot and prefer quick spring-back | cold foam |
| are setting up a guest bed and want a plain, low layer | a thin topper (possible with any foam type) |
| want to switch between soft and firm | reversible topper such as the 2-in-1 |
No foam type is better or worse per se. The most reliable way to find out is to test. You will find information on shipping and returns under Shipping & returns.
What to look for on the data sheet
Whichever foam type you choose, these details help with classification:
- Density: indicates how much foam is used per volume (for example 40 D for the Premium Comfort Topper). It cannot be compared directly between different foam types.
- Height: 5 cm or 7 cm change the feel and the total height to different degrees. More in the guide Topper thickness.
- Firmness: manufacturer's indication, not standardised.
- Cover: removable and washable? See Washing and caring for a topper.
- Name: "memory effect" is not the same as "memory foam". Pay attention to the exact wording.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a gel and a cold foam topper?
Gel foam is usually visco or memory foam with a gel component and feels cushioning. Cold foam is more open-celled and springs back faster. Both have pros and cons; which feel is more pleasant remains a matter of taste.
Is a gel topper better than a visco topper?
Not in general. Gel foam is often a variant of visco foam. Whether the gel component changes anything in everyday use depends on the product and on how you perceive it. Measurable benefits for everyone cannot be promised in general.
Is visco foam for people who move a lot?
If you turn a lot at night, you may sometimes find the slow recovery of visco foam a hindrance. Others do not find it disturbing. If quick spring-back matters to you, cold foam may suit you better. Simply test it yourself.
What does "memory foam effect" mean?
The term is not a protected material designation; it usually means a foam intended to imitate a yielding, delayed behaviour. How close it comes to true memory foam depends on the product. For the Dream Topper we deliberately state the name precisely: foam with a memory effect, not gel and not classic memory foam. This lets you compare fairly.
I have health complaints. Which topper helps?
No product replaces medical advice. If you have persistent complaints, please talk to a doctor or physiotherapist. This guide only describes material properties and feel.
